Keeping Fluffy Fit

If you have a cat, you’ve probably noticed that our feline friends are extremely fond of napping. In fact, cats can spend as much as 20 hours a day snoozing. While sleeping kitties are absolutely adorable, all those naps aren’t doing your pet’s waistline any favors. After all, catching Z’s is a lot easier than catching mice! You probably won’t have much luck getting Fluffy to run laps around the kitchen, so you may have to trick your drowsy furball into getting some exercise, especially as she grows older. A local Livonia, MI veterinarian offers advice on keeping your kitty active in this article.

Toys

Make sure your kitty has lots of fun toys to play with. Our feline friends all have their own individual tastes, so feel free to experiment a bit to find out what your pet likes best. You can get classic toys, like catnip mice and little balls. Or, you can offer your furball more modern toys, like an automatic laser pointer, or a robotic mouse.

Playtime!

Take time to play with your kitty every day. Use toys that you can control, such as a wand toy or laser pointer. This will really engage your feline pal’s inner huntress, and get Fluffy up and moving. Even a few minutes of pouncing and jumping will be beneficial.

Kitty Jungle Gyms

Get Fluffy a few pieces of furniture that promote healthy activities, such as jumping, climbing, and playing. A cat tree or tower is a wonderful option for this. You can find lots of great pet furniture online or in stores, but you can also make your own. For instance, you can upcycle an old stepladder into a kitty tower by adding planks to the steps to widen them out, and then wrapping the whole thing in carpet or sisal rope.

Playmates

Consider getting Fluffy a playmate. Of course, getting a pet is a lifelong commitment and a huge decision, so think carefully before deciding to adopt another furball. That said, if all lights are green, go for it! Your feline friends will keep each other company, and you’ll get to enjoy extra cuteness. Just be sure to make introductions slowly and carefully.
