Fun Ways to Celebrate National Dog Day

August 26th is National Dog Day! While we think Man’s Best Friend deserves to be honored and celebrated every day, this is a great time to pamper your furry pal. After all, Fido’s unwavering love and loyalty are truly wonderful gifts. Read on as a Livonia, MI vet offers tips on how to get that cute tail wagging.

Get little Fido lots of fun doggy toys, including suitable chew toys. Training is another great investment for a young dog: it will benefit both of you in the long run. Socialization is also very important for puppies. Host a puppy party, take your furkid to a doggy park or a dog-friendly café, or enroll him in puppygarten. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Adult Pooches

Fido is at the prime of his life! Stimulation and activity are both important to adult dogs. Consider making your pet a doggy playground, or get him a fun toy, like an automated ball launcher. (Note: because tennis balls post a choking risk to big dogs, these are not safe for large breeds.) You can also indulge your canine buddy with an extra-long walk or play session, or a fun trip to a park or trail. If your pooch likes to swim, get him a kiddie pool to splash around in.

Senior Dogs

As your loyal pet ages, he’ll slow down a bit, and may develop some aches and pains. Get your furry friend a good, orthopedic doggy bed to help him sleep more comfortably. Pet stairs are also a great gift, as they can help dogs with mobility issues get around more easily. Elevated dishes are another wonderful way to pamper a senior dog. A soothing massage also makes a great gift for older dogs.

All Dogs

No matter what age Fido is, yummy treats will likely get that furry tail wagging. Just be sure to choose healthy snacks. Another way to keep your canine pal happy and healthy is by providing him with regular veterinary care. Call to make an appointment. Last but not least, just spend time with Fido, and offer him lots of ear scritches and belly rubs. This is a great time to get some wonderful pictures of your furry best friend!
