Dogust Birthday for Shelter Dogs

Did you adopt your canine pal from a shelter? If so, that’s great! We love seeing dogs get second chances. While you may not know your pup’s exact birthday, you can still celebrate it. In fact, today, August 1st, is the official Dogust Birthday for Shelter Dogs! While toys, treats, and belly rubs are all among Fido’s favorite things, there are lots of other ways to make your pet’s birthday special for him. Read on for some tips from a Livonia, MI veterinarian on celebrating Fido’s birthday.

Puppy Party

Doggy birthday pictures are absolutely adorable! Get Fido some fun presents, like toys and treats. You can also invite over some friends with gentle, polite dogs, so your furry friend can play with his buddies.

Pupcake

Why not make your canine companion a birthday cake? You’ll need an egg, ¼ cup natural peanut butter, ¼ cup olive oil, 1 cup of shredded carrots, 1 cup of whole wheat flour, and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. You can also add a ripe banana if you like. Mix everything together, and bake at 350 for 40 minutes. Let it cool, and then use peanut butter for frosting. Just don’t let Fido eat the whole cake at once!

Fun Day

Treat Fido to a special excursion to a doggy park or a pet-friendly café. You can also pamper your four-legged buddy by getting him a doggy massage.

Photo Session

Take time to get some really good photos of your canine buddy. If your pup won’t sit still for photos, try downloading a pet camera app. Many of these are great for taking photos of our furry pals! Some also incorporate noises that will help get Fido’s attention.

New Digs

Do you have a yard for your pup to chase squirrels around in? A new doghouse will definitely get Fido’s furry tail going! You can also make your canine friend’s outdoor time more fun by getting him a kiddie pool or sandbox.

Love

At the end of the day, Fido really just wants to spend time with his favorite human: you! Spend some quality time with your dog. Play with him, pet him, and offer lots of ear scritches and belly rubs.
