Great Ways to Pamper a Senior Cat

Is your kitty beginning to slow down with age? Cats generally age slowly and gracefully, but, just like people, they do go through some changes as they get older. Read on as a Livonia, MI vet offers tips on keeping your feline buddy content and purring in her golden years.

By the time Fluffy reaches her senior years, she will be an expert napper, capable of snoozing up to 20 hours a day. Offer your drowsy pet lots of comfy spots to doze in. (Tip: you get extra purrs if some of your pet’s beds have sunbeam access.) You can also set out pet ramps or footstools to help your kitty reach her favorite spots more easily.

Fluffy may have trouble reaching her entire body to groom herself. Help her out by gently brushing her. This is a great way to spend some quality time with your kitty!

Doctor Visits

Senior kitties often experience many of the same issues that senior people have, such as arthritis, hearing and vision loss, and diabetes. Your pet may need more frequent veterinary appointments as she grows older. Between appointments, keep an eye out for signs of potential illness, and contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Senior Facilities

Older cats often find it easier to use litterboxes with low sides. You may need to upgrade Fluffy’s bathroom. If your home has more than one floor, keep litterboxes on each story. That way, your kitty won’t have to use the stairs as much.

While Fluffy may not be as frisky as she once was, she’ll still have her moments. Take a few minutes a day to play with your furry friend. This will be great for her both physically and mentally!

Kitty Comforts

Fluffy may experience a decline in vision in her golden years. Keeping a nightlight on after dark will help your furball find her way around. If you leave your cat home alone, leave a radio or TV on for her, so she doesn’t feel lonely.

Snuggle Time

Don’t be surprised if your kitty gets even more cuddly as she gets older. Indulge Fluffy’s adorable requests for snuggle time. Cat purrs are a truly precious gift!
